The Department of Health and the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority identified specific major health issues in Northamptonshire and so we are doing everything we can to tackle these problems in the best way we can.
Stroke
A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is disturbed. If brain cells go for too long without a proper supply of blood, they start to die. Most strokes happen when a blood clot gets stuck in an artery and blocks the flow of blood to the brain.
A less common type of stroke happens when a blood vessel bursts, causing bleeding in or around the brain.

Reducing obesity levels has been identified as key priority of NHS Northamptonshire's Strategic Plan for 2009-2014.
A central part of this plan is our three year Corby Wellbeing Project - Feel Good Corby. This project focuses on understanding the root causes of obesity in Corby, whilst trialling health interventions that will benefit the local community and the county as a whole, complementing our aim to be the fittest county.

Smoking is still the greatest cause of preventable illness and premature death in England, killing around 87,000 people each year and 7,000 in the East Midlands alone.
We know people living in more deprived areas of the country have lower levels of life expectancy and higher levels of long-term illness associated with smoking and so we still have a great deal more to do to reduce smoking prevalence in Northamptonshire and break down these health inequalities
